Sculpted in Marble
Prized since antiquity for its luminous quality, carved marble is enjoying something of a renaissance especially amongst sculptors. At the recent Maison et Objet, the Nigerian Swiss-based artist Ini Archibong presented Erosion, an intriguing collection of marble vases and bowls for Lapicida that have been digitally cut with a hi-tech precise automated machine. The resulting pattern is delicately eroded with a tactile humanistic dimension. “There is something poetic about the timelessness of stone, formerly handled solely by master craftsmen, now being shaped by a machine that is controlled by codes and algorithms that are the result of human ingenuity and the endpoint of technological advancements,” says Archibong.
