Masterworks: Unpacking Fashion
The Costume Institute’s Fall exhibition turns the spotlight on some of its most significant acquisitions, including iconic works that have shaped the course of fashion’s history and turned clothes into art. Eighteenth-century masterpieces will feature alongside relatively current creations such as a John Galliano for Maison Margiela from 2015, which in turn is juxtaposed against a 1964 Cristobal Balenciaga gown. Perhaps for all its ephemeral, shifting nature, some fashion will stand the test of time, as these masterworks demonstrate.
